Flower Care

Caring for your flower design

We want you to enjoy your florals and plants as long as possible.  Please read these care instructions:

Cut flowers in vase:

  • Flowers love to drink water! Check the water level frequently and make sure all the stem bottoms are submerged in water. Some stems maybe shorter than others, so make sure ALL stems are in water.

  • Fresh, clean water will keep your cut flowers alive longer. Remove the flowers from the vase every other day, or more often if the water looks cloudy; rinse the vase out thoroughly, and fill it with fresh water. If you have a water softener, if you live in an area that contains hard water with a high mineral count, or fluoride is added to your water, please use bottled water.

  • Never use a “home made” substitute for flower food such as aspirin, soda pop, or bleach.

  • Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight, away from cigarette smoke and fresh fruits and vegetables, and in a cool location.

  • Everything has a season, as the flowers wilt and die, remove them to prevent rot and bacteria from spreading to the other flowers.

  • Do not put ice in your vase.

  • Email, call or text us if you have any questions regarding caring for your arrangement. info@floralcreations.biz 480-674-0022

Cut flowers, wrapped bouquet:

  •  Put your flowers in water ASAP. If they are dropping, they should perk up after following these instructions.

  •  Choose a vase that does not crowd the flowers. Clean your vase thoroughly. Any lingering bacteria will make your flowers wilt faster. Never use flower food in crystal or metal containers as the acid in the flower food will react with metal (including the lead in crystal).

  •  Fill the vase two-thirds (or further to cover shorter stems) with fresh, lukewarm water, and add your flower food. Top up the water the day after receiving your flowers, rather than changing it completely, then they benefit from the food longer. If you have a water softener, if you live in an area that contains hard water with a high mineral count, or if fluoride is added to your water, please use bottled water.

  • Do not put ice in your vase.

  • Remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline to avoid build-up of debris.  Never remove all foliage from the stem.

  • Trim about 2-3cm from the bottom of the stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or clippers. We recommend varying the stem length to give your arrangement a height range

  • Fresh, clean water will keep your cut flowers alive longer. Remove the flowers from the vase every other day, or more often if the water becomes cloud;  rinse the vase out, and fill it with fresh water.

Flowers arranged in floral foam

  • The floral foam will suspend water in its pores, allowing easy access to the flowers.  Every day, add fresh water to the center of the arrangement, allowing your flowers to freely drink water all day long. Even one day with no extra water in the container can cut the life span of your flowers to just a day or two. If your arrangement is presented in a box, basket or floral bag, be careful to add water to the center so the water is contained inside the waterproof lining. To be safe, add water with your arrangement sitting in the sink or other water-proof surface.

Plants

  • Keep plants in medium-light locations – out of direct sunlight.

  • Natural light is best, but some plants can also thrive in office fluorescent light. Most flowering potted plants should be placed in areas with the most light in order to maintain good flower color and promote the maximum number of flowers to open. Foliage plants will do well under lower light levels and can be placed in areas providing reduced light.

  • Plant soil should be kept moist at all times

  • Plants should not be allowed to dry out or wilt. Be careful to avoid overwatering – do not allow plants to stand in water.

  • Avoid wetting plant leaves

  • Avoid excessive heat or cold

  • Plants should be kept in a cool spot (between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit) for best performance. They should be kept away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, or directly under ceiling fans.

  • If your arrangement is presented in a box, basket or floral bag, be careful to add water to the center so the water is contained inside the waterproof lining. To be safe, add water with your arrangement sitting in the sink or other water-proof surface.

  • ORCHID CARE: Orchids need ample water but should be allowed to dry out some between waterings. One way to check for watering is by poking your finger about an inch (2.5 cm.) into the growing media. If it’s dry, give it some water; otherwise, let it be.  Indoor orchid plants also need adequate humidity, about fifty to seventy percent.  Place a water-filled saucer or tray of pebbles beneath plants, mist plants daily, or use a humidifier.

  • SUCCULENT CARE: Succulents like a warmer climate (60 to 90 degrees) and in-direct sunlight. Water when the soil feels dry. Do not over-water. You can re-plant into a bigger pot.

Corsages & Boutonnieres

  • Your corsage or boutonniere has been hydrated and sprayed with a floral preservative.

  • If you are going to wear your flowers in the next few hours, you can leave it out in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.

  • If it starts to look a little droopy, you can spray it with water and place it in the refrigerator for awhile (see fridge tip below).

  • If you are not wearing your flowers until the next day, place it in the refrigerator in the box they came in. Place them in a spot that will not freeze the flowers, usually a spot on a middle shelf, towards the front of the fridge is safe. Make sure your fruit and veggies are in a crisper drawer AWAY from the flowers. They emit gasses that will rot the flowers.

  • If you do not have a cool place or a refrigerator to store your flowers, you may use a cooler with ice in it. Do not put the flowers directly on ice! Put a towel on top of the ice and place the flowers inside the cooler in the container they came in.

Leis

  • If you are not using your lei right away, you can refrigerate it until needed. We do not recommend picking up your lei any sooner than the day prior to your event. Put it in the warmest spot in your fridge that will not freeze the flowers. Usually a spot on a middle shelf, towards the front of the fridge is safe. Make sure your fruit and veggies are in a crisper drawer AWAY from the flowers. They emit gasses that will rot the flowers.

  • After your remove your lei from the fridge, you can spray it with water to hydrate it. If the flowers look droopy, fill a large bowl with room temperature water and soak the lei for 30 minutes to an hour.

  • If you will be out in the heat for a long period of time with your lei, for example, sitting on the bleachers at graduation, plan ahead!  The day before, take 3 paper towels and fold each of them flat, wet them, place each of them in a ziploc sandwich bag and freeze them. Put them in the bottom of the lei box and place the lei on top of them to keep it cool until it is presented.

  • If you will be in the sun for any length of time, keep the lei shaded.
